Toyota Electric Fuel Pump Replacing?

The details for Toyota Camry/Avalon 1997-2000.

In this chapter the details are provided for electric fuel pump replacing and diagrams shown for this procedure.


NOTE
Be sure this procedure is done in a well ventilated area.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  3. Remove the rear seat cushion.
  4. Remove the floor service hole cover.
  5. Disconnect the electrical fuel pump wiring at the fuel pump assembly. Check for any fuel leakage while in there.
  6. Remove the bolts and then the No.1 fuel tank protector.
  7. Remove the gas cap, this will prevent any fuel gas spilling out of any high pressure lines.
  8. Disconnect the outlet pipe (fuel tube connector) from the pump bracket.
  9. Remove the bolts and then the fuel tank vent tube set plate.
  10. Pull out the fuel pump assembly.
  11. Slide the gasket off the end of the fuel pump assembly to remove it.
To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2. After installing the fuel pump into the tank, torque the bolts to 35 in. lbs. (4 Nm).
  3. Torque the fuel tank protector bolts to 35 in. lbs. (4 Nm).
TESTING
You can check the operation of the fuel pump by performing the following test.
  1. Attach the positive battery lead to terminal 4.
  2. Attach the negative lead to terminal 5.

WARNING
Perform this test within 10 seconds to prevent premature ignition coil burn out. Keep the fuel pump as far away from the battery as possible.

  1. Check that the fuel pump operates.
  2. If the pump does not properly operate, replace the fuel pump and or lead.
  3. Connect the fuel pump connector.
  4. Attach the fuel pump sender gauge connector.
  5. Install the floor service hole cover.
  6. Install the rear seat cushion.

CAUTION
Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around fuel. Whenever servicing the fuel system, always work in a well ventilated area. Do not allow fuel spray or vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher near the work area. Always keep fuel in a container specifically designed for fuel storage; also, always properly seal fuel containers to avoid the possibility of fire or explosion.
