  1. Engage a torque wrench, with a maximum 2 inch extension in the 1 / 2 inch square opening of the tensioner bracket.
  2. Apply torque, counter-clockwise to the tensioner bracket.
    1. New belts: 104 ft. lbs. (141 Nm).
    2. Used belts: 71 ft. lbs. (96 Nm).
    3. Continue to apply torque while tightening the upper fastener. Tighten the fastener to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  3. Remove the torque wrench from tensioner bracket, and torque lower tensioner bracket fastener to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).

Power Steering Pump Belt Adjustment:

CAUTION
Do not check belt tension with engine running.

  1. Insert a 1 / 2 - drive breaker bar into the square opening on the power steering pump bracket.
  2. Hold clockwise pressure on power steering pump bracket and tighten adjusting bolt.
  3. Verify proper belt tension
Accessory drive belt tension can be measured with Special Tool 8371 - Belt Tension Gauge Adapter, and the DRBIII® using the following procedures:
  1. Connect 8371 to the DRBIII® following the instructions provided with tool.
  2. Place end of microphone probe approximately 1 inch (2.54cm) from belt at one of the belt center span locations.
  3. Pluck the belt a minimum of 3 times. (Use your finger or other suitable tool) The frequency of the belt in hertz (Hz) will display on DRBIII® screen.
  4. Adjust belt to obtain proper frequency (tension) listed below:
New Belts

A/C & Alternator: 185-235 lbs. (250-320 N)
Power Steering Pump: 120-180 lbs. (163-245 N)

Used Belts

A/C & Alternator: 110-160 lbs. (150-215 N)
Power Steering Pump: 70-115 lbs. (95-155 N)

CAUTION
Do not check belt tension with engine running.

  1. Insert a 1 / 2 inch drive breaker bar into the square opening on the power steering pump bracket.
  2. Hold clockwise pressure on the power steering pump bracket and tighten the adjusting bolt.
  3. Verify proper belt tension.

Belt Tension Inspection:

Check the accessory drive belts for evidence of damage, cuts, cracks or any unusual wear and replace if necessary.
Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.
