Timing Chain & Sprockets Replacing on Ford, Mercury and Lincoln?

The procedure is similar for Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, Lincoln Town Car.

Timing Chain & Sprockets
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Details are as follows :-----

CAUTION
Since the engine is not free-wheeling, timing procedures must be followed exactly or piston and valve damage can occur.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
Use compressed air to remove any foreign material from the spark plug wells before removing the spark plugs.

    Engine front cover
Crankshaft sensor ring from the crankshaft
    Ignition coil electrical connectors
    Ignition coils

    Spark plugs
  4. Position the lobe of the camshaft up.
  5. Install the special tool between the valve spring coils to prevent valve stem seal damage.
    NOTE
The roller followers are positional. Mark the followers for installation in their original locations.
  6. Use special tool 303-581 or a suitable on-head valve spring compressor to compress the valve spring and remove the camshaft roller followers.
  7. Position the crankshaft with the keyway at the 12 o-clock position.
  8. Remove the timing chain tensioning system from both timing chains.
    1. Remove the bolts.
    2. Remove the timing chain tensioners.
    3. Remove the timing chain tensioner arms.
  9. Remove the LH and RH timing chains and the crankshaft sprocket as follows:

Remove the RH timing chain from the camshaft sprocket.
Remove the RH timing chain from the crankshaft sprocket.
Repeat for the LH timing chain and crankshaft sprocket.
  10. Remove the timing chain guides as follows:

    Remove the bolts.
Remove the LH timing chain guide.
    Remove the bolts.
Remove the RH timing chain guide.

Engines With Non-Ratcheting Timing Chain Tensioners
Specific to:
Ford Crown Victoria 2008-2009
Lincoln Town Car 2008-2009
Mercury Grand Marquis 2008-2009

WARNING
If one or both tensioner mounting bolts are loosened or removed, the tensioner-sealing bead must be inspected for seal integrity. Any cracks, tears, cuts or separation from the tensioner body or permanent compression of the seal bead, will require replacement of the tensioner.

WARNING
The timing chain procedure must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result.

  1. Inspect the RH and LH timing chain tensioners and replace as necessary.
  2. Compress each tensioner plunger, using a vise.
  3. Install a retaining clip on each tensioner to hold the plunger in during installation.
  4. If the copper links on the timing chain are not visible, mark one link on one end and one link on the other end and use as timing marks.
  5. Install the camshaft sprockets and new bolts and tighten in two stages:

Stage 1: Tighten the bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
Stage 2: Tighten the bolt an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).
  6. Using the special tool, position the crankshaft so the number one cylinder is at top dead center (TDC).
  7. Install the crankshaft sprocket, making sure the flange faces forward.
  8. Install the timing chain guide as follows:

Position the LH timing chain guide.
Install and tighten the LH bolts.
Position the RH timing chain guide.
Install and tighten the RH bolts.
  9. Rotate the RH camshaft sprocket until the timing mark is approximately at the 11 o-clock position.
  10. Rotate the LH camshaft sprocket until the timing mark is approximately at the 12 o-clock position.
  11. Position the LH (inner) timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket, aligning the copper (marked) link with the timing mark on the sprocket.
  12. Install the LH timing chain on the sprocket, aligning the copper (marked) link with the timing marks on the sprocket.
    NOTE
The LH timing chain tensioner arm has a bump near the dowel hole for identification. Position the LH timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the LH timing chain tensioner.
  13. Remove the retaining clip from the LH timing chain tensioner.
  14. Position the RH (outer) timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket, aligning the copper (marked) link with the timing mark on the sprocket.
  15. Install the RH timing chain on the camshaft sprocket, aligning the copper (marked) link with the timing marks on the sprocket.
  16. Position the RH timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the RH timing chain tensioner.
  17. Remove the retaining clip from the RH timing chain tensioner.
  18. Make sure that the copper (marked) chain links are lined up with the dots on the crankshaft sprocket and the camshaft sprockets.
  19. Rotate the camshaft until the lobe is in the up position.
  20. Install the special tool between the valve spring coils to prevent valve stem seal damage.
    NOTE
Lubricate the camshaft roller followers using clean engine oil.
  21. Install the camshaft roller followers as using this procedure:

    Install the special tool.
    Compress the valve spring.
Install the camshaft roller followers in their original locations.
  22. Install the eight spark plugs.
  23. Install the eight ignition coils and bolts.
  24. Connect the eight ignition coil electrical connectors.
  25. Install the crankshaft sensor ring on the crankshaft.
  26. Install the engine front cover.
  27. Reconnect negative battery cable, run engine to check for leaks and repair as necessary.

WARNING
Timing chain procedure must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result.

WARNING
Do not compress the ratchet assembly. This will damage the ratchet assembly.

  1. Compress each tensioner plunger using an edge of a vise.
  2. Using a small screwdriver or pick, push back and hold the ratchet mechanism.
  3. While holding the ratchet mechanism, push the ratchet arm back into the tensioner housing.
  4. Install a paper clip into the hole of each tensioner housing to hold the ratchet assembly and plunger in during installation.
  5. Remove the tensioner from the vise.
  6. If the copper links on the timing chain are not visible, mark one link on one end and one link on the other end and use as timing marks.
