How to Replace Coolant Temperature sensor on Ford E series?

The details to replace Coolant temperature sensor is as follows:-----

Removal & Installation
4.6L, 5.4L & 6.8L ENGINES
6.0L ENGINE

4.6L, 5.4L & 6.8L Engines



Specific to:
Ford E-150 2008-2009
Ford E-250 2008-2009
Ford E-350 Super Duty 2008-2009
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  4. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Tighten the sensor to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  5. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.

6.0L Engine



Specific to:
Ford E-350 Super Duty 2008-2009
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Partially drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the retainers and air deflector.

  4. Remove the power steering reservoir bracket retainers.
  5. Remove the power steering fluid indicator and retainers. Remove the power steering reservoir bracket. Install the power steering indicator and position aside.
  6. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the air cleaner outlet pipe.
  7. Loosen the clamps and remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.
    NOTE
    If there is any oil residue, clean both connecting ports and the inside surface of the charge air cooler pipe to prevent the pipe from blowing off.
  8. Loosen the clamps and remove the charge air cooler (CAC) pipe.
  9. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) electrical connector.
  10. Remove the ECT sensor.
  11. Installation is the reverse order of removal.


Operation:--
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor device in which resistance changes with temperature. The electrical resistance of a thermistor decreases as the temperature increases, and increases as the temperature decreases. The varying resistance affects the voltage drop across the sensor terminals and provides electrical signals to the PCM corresponding to temperature.

Ford E-350 Super Duty 2008-2009

Inspect the air cleaner and inlet duct. Check all engine vacuum hoses for damage, leaks, cracks, kinks and proper routing. Check Electronic Control (EC) system wiring harness for proper connections, bent or broken pins, corrosion, loose wires and proper routing. Check the powertrain control module (PCM), sensors, and actuators for physical damage.

Basic circuit checks help to minimize pinpoint test steps by providing a procedure to diagnose harness faults associated with the Electronic Engine Control (EC) System:



Open Circuit (Continuity): Disconnect PCM. Measure the harness resistance between the suspect circuit at the harness connector and the appropriate PCM harness connector pin or PCM breakout box (if available). The resistance must be less than 5.0 ohms.
Shorts to Ground: Measure the harness resistance between the suspect circuit at the harness connector and a reliable ground (B-, chassis gnd or PWR GND at the PCM breakout box, if available). The resistance must be greater than 10,000 ohms.
Shorts to Power: Key ON to power up circuit. Measure voltage between the suspect circuit at the harness connector and a reliable ground. The voltage must be less than 1.0 volt.

Disconnect all the PCM connectors. Visually inspect for: 

Pushed out pins
corrosion

Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
Carry out the PCM self-test and verify the error is still present.
