CV-Boots Inspection



Inspect the underbody for any indication of grease splatter in the vicinity of the front wheel driveshaft CV joint boots outboard and inboard locations, which is an indication of front wheel driveshaft CV joint boot and/or front wheel driveshaft CV joint boot clamp damage.

CV-Joints Overhaul



Assembly

WARNING
The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees; the outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.


NOTE
Install the wheel-side boot over the transaxle side.

  1. Install the boot at the wheel end and inject grease into the outer joint.
  2. Slide a suitable tool under the boot seat to allow the air to escape.
  3. Locate the boot in position and remove the suitable tool.
    NOTE
    Install new clamping straps.
  4. Install the boot at the transaxle end, insert the clamping strap in the boot ring groove and tighten it using a CV joint boot strap tightener.
    WARNING
    Do not damage the universal joint rollers.
  5. Using a suitable bearing press, push the tripod onto the front drive halfshaft as far as it will go.
  6. Install a new snap ring.
Disassembly
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    WARNING
    The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees; the outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.
  2. Disconnect the driveshaft at the transaxle end.
  3. Separate and discard the clamping straps. Push back the boot along the shaft.
  4. Pull apart the tripod joint and remove all the grease.
  5. Remove the tripod snap ring.
  6. Remove the tripod with a suitable bearing separator.
  7. Detach the boot at the wheel end and remove the grease.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  3. Loosen the strut and spring assembly top mount nuts by four turns.
  4. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  5. Loosen the wheel hub retaining nut.
  6. Raise and support the vehicle.
  7. Remove the wheel.
    WARNING
    Protect the ball joint seat using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
  8. Detach the lower arm ball joint.
    NOTE
    The wheel hub retaining nut can be reused four times; mark the retaining nut.
  9. Press the halfshaft out of the wheel hub.
    WARNING
    Support the halfshaft. The inner halfshaft joint must not be bent by more than 18 degrees.
  10. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
  11. Remove the front drive halfshaft from the transaxle.
    NOTE
    On vehicles equipped with an intermediate shaft, the intermediate shaft and halfshaft are removed as an assembly.
  12. Close off the transaxle with auxiliary plugs.
To install:
  1. Install new self locking nuts and snap ring.
    WARNING
    Do not damage the oil seal when inserting the front drive halfshaft.
  2. Make sure the snap ring is fully engaged, by pulling on the joint housing.
  3. Remove the auxiliary plug from the transaxle opening.
  4. Install the halfshaft and snap ring into the transaxle.
    NOTE
    The wheel hub retaining nut can be reused four times, inspect the markings on the retaining nut and install a new nut if necessary.
  5. Do not fully tighten the wheel hub retaining nut.
  6. Install the halfshaft stub into the wheel hub.
  7. Loosely install the wheel hub retaining nut. Do not fully tighten.
  8. Check the transmission fluid level.
  9. Attach the lower arm ball joint and tighten the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
  10. Install the wheel and loosely install the nuts. Do not fully tighten.
  11. Tighten the wheel hub retaining nut to 233 ft. lbs. (316 Nm)
  12. Tighten the wheel nuts to 94 ft. lbs. (128 Nm)
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Tighten the strut and spring assembly to mount nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
  15. Reconnect negative battery cable.
