How to replace Rocker Arms and Shafts on 2005 Ford Explorer?

Removal & Installation



This procedure covers the removal and installation of the Camshaft Roller Follower and Hydraulic Lash Adjusters.
4.0L Engine
VIN E Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the -Precautions- section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the valve cover.
  4. Remove the fuel rail.
  5. Remove the cooling fan (except Sport-Trac).
  6. Rotate the crankshaft until the camshaft for the cylinder being serviced is at base circle.
    NOTE
    If removing more than one cam follower, label them so they can be returned to their original position.
  7. Using special tool 303-581, remove the camshaft roller followers.

  8. Mark each lash adjuster before removal; remove each lash adjuster, as necessary.
To install:
  1. Lubricate the lash adjusters and camshaft roller followers with clean engine oil.
  2. Install each lash adjuster.
  3. Using special tool 303-581, remove the camshaft roller followers into their original positions.
  4. Install the cooling fan, if removed.
  5. Install the fuel rail.
  6. Install the valve cover.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
4.6L (VIN H) DOHC Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the -Precautions- section.
  2. Remove the valve covers.
  3. Remove the cooling fan.
  4. Remove the spark plugs.
    NOTE
    Position the piston of the cylinder to be serviced at the bottom of the stroke and the camshaft at base circle.
  5. Using the special tool, partially compress the intake valve spring and remove the camshaft roller follower.

  6. Using the special tool, partially compress the exhaust valve spring and remove the camshaft roller follower.
    NOTE
    Mark the location of the hydraulic lash adjusters to make sure they are assembled in their original position.
  7. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.
  8. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

4.6L (VIN W) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the -Precautions- section.
  2. Remove the valve covers.
  3. Remove the cooling fan.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the bolts and ignition coils.
  5. Remove the spark plugs.
  6. Rotate the crankshaft until the cam lobe is directly away from the roller follower.

  7. Install the special tool 303-382 onto the valve spring as shown.
    NOTE
    The 3 rearmost followers on the RH side must use special tool 303-581 in the same manner as is shown in the illustration.


    NOTE
    The roller followers are positional. Mark the roller followers for installation in their original locations.

  8. Using the special tool 303-452, partially compress the exhaust valve spring and remove the camshaft roller follower.

  9. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.
  10. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
